The Northeast Texas Regional Alliance hosted the Workforce and Economic Prosperity Summit in Mount Pleasant on Wednesday June 6, at the Mount Pleasant Civic Center. The Northeast Texas Regional Alliance is a group of industry, civic, education, workforce, and economic development leaders from Northeast Texas who have come together to address regional challenges. Last year this group traveled to Austin during the legislative session and heard from a number of legislators and state agency leaders on current topics in Texas and how those relate to Northeast Texas. This year's Summit, brought several state leaders to Mount Pleasant for an update on some of those issues. Senator Bryan Hughes provided the group with an update on the hot legislative topics for the state and Northeast Texas, as we look ahead to next year’s legislative session. Dr. Jenna Hege with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, provided the group with an update on the 60x30TX initiative. Randy Reed, Executive Director of Workforce Solutions Northeast Texas, moderated a panel discussion on post-secondary education. The panel included: Dr. Pam Anglin, President of Paris Junior College; James Henry Russell, President of Texarkana College; Dr. Ron Clinton, President of Northeast Texas Community College; and Dr. David Yells, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Texas A&M University - Texarkana. The group discussed their legislative focus, importance of partnerships, and keys to meeting industry workforce needs. Dr. David Fitts, with the Region 8 Education Service Center spoke about the importance of the public school system for the Texas workforce and how Region 8 interacts with those schools. Texas Workforce Commissioner Julian Alvarez provided the luncheon keynote address. Commission Alvarez provided an update on programs across the state that are attempting to train a skilled workforce and meet employer needs.
