Workforce Solutions Northeast Texas hosted the Financial Literacy for Youth, or FLY, event on April 17th at the Region 8 Education Service Center. Four area schools, and about 140 high school juniors participated in the event. FLY aims to help students explore career options and better understand financial decisions. Students spent time participating in various employer panels, including Manufacturing, Health Care, Finance, and Public Services. Local employers participated in each of these panels to give students information on hiring practices, entry level jobs, and tips on how to succeed in the workplace. Students also participated in a financial decision simulation. Students first selected a career and then learned the amount of their annual salary. Students then made decisions on several categories including housing, transportation, food/groceries, entertainment, and others. After completing all of the categories, students worked with our staff to review their decisions and find out if they stayed within their budget, and if they did not, what financial decisions could they have changed to accomplish this goal. Finally, students heard a keynote speech from Juan Bandana, on leadership.
